The Book
Challenging Boys
A Proven Plan for Keeping Your Cool and Helping Your Son Thrive
A practical, research-informed guide for parents who feel overwhelmed by conflict, meltdowns, and daily power struggles—and want a calmer, more confident way forward.

When parenting feels like putting out fires.
If you have a child who argues every request, explodes over small frustrations, or refuses to cooperate, you know how exhausting it can be. You may find yourself losing your patience despite your best intentions. Many parents begin to wonder whether they’re doing something wrong—or whether something is wrong with their child. This book offers a different lens: understanding first, then skill-building.
What you’ll learn.

A firefighter’s plan for parenting.
Before becoming a psychologist, I spent time working as a volunteer firefighter. One of the most important lessons firefighters learn is that preparation matters as much as response. We train, plan, and understand the conditions that lead to emergencies so we can respond effectively when pressure rises.
Parenting a child with intense emotions often requires a similar approach.
In Challenging Boys, I guide parents in learning how to anticipate triggers, recognize patterns in their child’s behavior, and develop a thoughtful plan for responding when emotions run high. Rather than reacting in the moment, parents can approach challenging situations with clarity, steadiness, and confidence.
